NAOWA Vocational and Skill Aquisition Centre
NAOWA has Vocational Training and Skill Acquisition centres in all the six geo-political zones of the country. These centres cater for women and young persons within the barracks and the surrounding communities who desire to acquire vocational skills in computer literacy, engineering, fashion and textile design, cosmetology, hair dressing and barbing. Since inception of these centres in 1988, about 100,000 students out of which 90% were women have acquired one skill or the other.
Over the years, the international community and national governments have stressed the importance of women empowerment. Consequently, various conventions and conferences outlined platforms including the Millennium Development Goals on women’s rights and development. In line with the MDGs, the Nigerian Government designed various women economic empowerment programmes at the national, state and local levels. In other to compliment government’s effort and bring to bear the impact of the Millennium Development Goals on the barrack and its environs, NAOWA embarked on a number of activities including the establishment of more skills acquisition centres to empower women, youths and the less privileged.
