The wife of the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Her Excellency Mrs Bolanle Ambode has described the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) as an example of a well-meaning social welfare Association the country needed at this period of recession. Mrs Ambode made this remark at the commissioning of newly renovated NAOWA Model Nursery/Primary School and graduation ceremony of NAOWA Skills Empowerment Initiative Program held at the Nigerian Army Cantonment, Ojo Lagos. Her Excellency Mrs Ambode who was represented at the occasion by Mrs Ganiyat Bolaji applauded NAOWA leadership for her determination towards ameliorating the sufferings of the less privileged in the society.
The renovation which was done by the National President of NAOWA and wife of the Chief of Army Staff, Mrs Umma-Kalsum Tukur Buratai, was necessary to create a conducive learning environment for pupils of the school drawn mainly from the cantonment and surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, the beneficiaries of the NAOWA Empowerment Initiative Scheme were trained in various skills such as hotel management, catering, tailoring, hair dressing, beads and soap making. Other areas are fashion design, barbing saloon, cosmetics amongst others. Accordingly, the beneficiaries were provided with starter packs such as tailoring machines, microwaves, barbing kits, soap making kits, hair driers amongst others.
Speaking earlier, the National President Mrs Umma-Kalsum Tukur Buratai revealed that the charity program is part of the efforts of NAOWA to reduce unemployment by empowering young people in the barracks in various viable skills.
